January 2007: ICE Your Cell Phone: Let Emergency Personnel Know Whom to Contact
There is a growing movement to get people to enter in their cell phone’s “Contacts” or directory a listing of whom to contact in the event of an emergency. Emergency personnel know to check a victim's cell phone for an entry of ICE (In Case of Emergency). From that file emergency personnel know whom to contact in case you are involved in an accident.
If you haven’t already get your cell phone out now, go to your Contacts or directory and click on “New Contact.” In the name field enter ICE and then the person’s name. Enter the person’s various telephone numbers (mobile, work, and home) so the police, hospital or fire department know whom to contact. This can save precious time in reaching the people close to you.
If you have a personal digital assistant (PDA) you should also add an ICE listing in your phone book. Another idea is to place a card with emergency contact information in the glove compartment of your automobile in case you forgot your cell phone or the emergency workers can’t find it.
It’s a small effort taking only a little bit of your time to make an ICE entry but is invaluable when needed. So do it now while you are thinking about it then get all of your friends and family members to set up an ICE contact in their cell phones.
