June 2008: On a Personal Note — Hosting a Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project Weekend

Some of you may know I run an adaptive snow sports program that teaches people with disabilities to ski and snowboard at Liberty Mountain Resort in Fairfield, PA. The adaptive program is supported by a nonprofit organization, Blue Ridge Adaptive Snow Sports (BRASS). BRASS and Liberty Mountain hosted a Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project event the first weekend in March. Nine (9) military personnel and their families spent the weekend skiing, snowboarding, tubing and having a great time. Most of our participants were injured fighting in the global war on terrorism and stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC). At Walter Reed they are going through rehabilitation and learning how to use their new prosthetic limbs. We also had a few Walter Reed graduates now enjoying their new sports as a aprt of their daily lives. One of our students plans to become an adaptive snow sports instructor with our program next season.
The weekend is provided to the military personnel and families free of charge. With the generosity of Liberty Mountain Resort, The Gettysburg Times, American Legion Gettysburg Post, other military organizations and individuals, we provided our soldiers and Marines with a fun-filled weekend with their family and friends.
